The G- 5′ s five disgruntled PDP leaders may leave the party before the general election of 2027, according to The Punch.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has been attempting to recruit one of them to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State, is a member of the G- 5, together with former governors of Rivers, Abia, Enugu, and Benue states; Nyesom Wike, Okezie Ikpeazu, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and Samuel Ortom.
Recall that following the nomination of Atiku Abubakar as the PDP’ s presidential candidate for the 2023 election, the PDP chieftains rejected Senator Iyorchia Ayu’ s prolonged tenure as national chairman of the party. They also took action against Atiku, who was defeated by Bola Tinubu of the APC and is now president.
The five PDP leaders are believed to have been in contact with Tinubu despite the fact that the PDP is contesting the results of the election on February 25 at the Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja.
After the May 29 inauguration, Wike, the group’ s head, paid Tinubu several visits at the Presidential Villa; this led PDP chieftains to wonder whether he should still be a member of the PDP.
According to Raymond Magen, a former Principal Special Assistant to Ortom, ” Deep talks” between the APC and the five opposition leaders are currently taking place and could result in their defection in the coming months.
” They are often speaking with the APC, Magen continued. These discussions between the PDP leaders and the opposition parties go far deeper than simple discussions. There are no signs that they are still engaged in what is happening in their party, so they might be joining the APC. “
The former PSA responded when asked to provide further context for his assertion, saying, ” The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, for instance, has been talking to Ortom. The discussions are progressing, and it is anticipated that the G- 5 members will reach a consensus. “
The appointments Tinubu will make in the coming weeks, according to Diran Odeyemi, a member of the PDP National Executive Committee, will show whether some of the G- 5 leaders still have a role to play in the PDP.
” We have recently heard their statements, and they speak volumes about where their hearts are, he said. It looks like some of them may join the incoming government in the appointments to be made, and if that occurs, it suggests they are already considering life without the PDP. “
While Ortom established a group made up of some of his most loyal advisers and allies to work for the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, Wike, and Makinde reportedly rallied their party members to back Tinubu.
