The former Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo speaking his Facebook page, revealed that a professor, whose name was withheld, told him years ago that Onitsha, a city in Anambra and Anambra State, which is located in the South-Eastern part of Nigeria is not an Igbo state.
Asari Dokubo said: “I met a traditional title holder, I would not like to call his name in Dubai, in the hotel I stayed in. He was dressed as an Onitsha man, a traditional title holder and a professor years ago in Dubai, and he stopped me and he said, I guess you’re Asari, I said yes sir. He said, I am very close to your king, you’re his cousin, I said yes. The next thing we discussed, we gambled into history, he said you know, Onitsha is not Igbo. I’ve read it, I’ve formed it, the Benin descendants about Azikiwe, that they formed Edo descendants and so on in the early thirties, forties. But, this is a man that I was sitting with, and he was telling me that Onitsha is not Igbo.
“We are Benin people, we just found ourselves in Igbo land. A professor, a title holder, I just pinched myself. And he went on to tell me, do you know Anambra is not an Igbo State? He said Anambra is not an Igbo State, there are Igala people in Anambra State. There are Igala people in Anambra State, there are Edo people in Anambra State, and their population is not small, these were his words”.
