Unlike regular bishops or priests, this ritual is unique to the papal funeral rites, reflecting the pope’s special role as the Vicar of Christ on Earth. The veil is placed during a private ceremony by the Papal Master of Ceremonies, moments before the coffin is closed for the final time.
