Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, recently shared a poignant reflection on his early life struggles during a school reunion in Umuahia. “I grew up in Port Harcourt. Poverty was everywhere; we couldn’t feed, you could hardly eat three times a day, and you could hardly change your clothes,” Amaechi revealed. “In fact, when I tell people that I wore a shirt and trousers for nearly four years, most people don’t believe it, but my classmates will tell you.”

Addressing his former classmates, Amaechi humorously remarked on how their past perceptions influenced their interactions. “We are going for a reunion in Umuahia, and I usually tease my classmates when we meet at reunions. I would say, ‘You see, one of you could have been Mrs. Amaechi now, maybe if you had agreed by the time we were in school.’ But because we were very poor, we didn’t have money to feed, we didn’t have clothes to wear, you people didn’t give us attention. You people didn’t think we had a bright future,” he said.

Amaechi’s journey from such humble beginnings to holding significant political positions—including two terms as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two terms as Governor, and serving as Minister of Transportation—serves as a testament to resilience and determination.

His story resonates as an inspiration, highlighting how perseverance can lead to success regardless of one’s starting point in life.
