University of Ibadan Warns Female Students Against Egg Donation as Income Source
The University of Ibadan (UI) has issued a health advisory cautioning female students against the increasing trend of donating eggs for financial gain. The University Health Service (UHS) highlighted concerns over students being recruited by individuals or agencies for egg donation intended for in-vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures.​
In a memo titled “Health Advisory on Egg Donation,” the UHS emphasized that while egg donation can offer hope to families facing infertility, it should not be considered a reliable source of income or a “side hustle.” The advisory outlined potential health risks associated with the procedure, including hormonal imbalances, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, and possible long-term fertility issues.​
The university urged students to seek professional medical advice before considering egg donation and to be wary of recruitment efforts that may not fully disclose the associated risks. The UHS stressed the importance of making informed decisions that prioritize long-term health and well-being over short-term financial gains.​
This advisory comes amid reports of students being offered significant sums for their eggs, with some discussions mentioning payments up to ₦400,000 per donation cycle.
