However, according to the Sun paper, Onuoha Ukeh, a Nigerian columnist for the Sun paper, expressed a unique perspective in his article published on Friday, September 8. Ukeh suggested that the tribunal’s decision had led Nigerians to perceive the country as having 37 states. He argued that this interpretation disregarded the use of conjunctions in the English language.
In his words, “The presidential election tribunal’s interpretation of the law implies that Nigeria now has 37 states, as, according to the justices, there is no special status for the FCT. Thus, the conjunction ‘and’ in that provision of the Constitution is equated with ‘including.’”
