During an interview with Arise , Samson Itodo, Executive Director of YIAGA Africa, stated that the European Union didn’t just deploy to Nigeria but came on the invitation of the Nigerian government. He made the statement after he was asked to react to the reaction of the federal government to the EU’s report.

As regards this, Samson Itodo revealed that the EU has been part of the Nigerian election observers, and as such, their reports have been valued right from the democratic period. He addedthat the content of their report actually correlates with the electoral process.
According to him, “the EU of the observation election mission didn’t just deploy to Nigeria; it came on the invitation of the Nigerian government. The second critical thing of note is that across the world, the EU observation mission is reputed as one of the leading international observation missions of elections because it has a standard comprehensive framework for assessing electoral integrity, and I think it’s based on that that since 2007 until date, the EU has been observing Nigeria’s election, and some of the reports of the EU have become reference points for reforms. If you look at the statement issued by the federal government, they referenced the 2022 electoral act, and I think Nigerians need to know that that act that we celebrate had contributions from the EU. “
