In the midst of the ongoing public outcry surrounding the yearly ‘Proof Of Ownership’ tax implemented by the Tinubu administration, public affairs commentator and road safety consultant, Patrick Adenusi, has expressed strong criticism towards the Federal Government of Nigeria regarding the nature of the tax imposed on the general population.

Recent reports from various media outlets revealed that starting from July, the Federal Government will begin collecting a fee of one thousand Naira for certificates of ownership for all operational vehicles nationwide.

It was further disclosed that these certificates would serve as valid evidence that a vehicle is lawfully owned by the registered individual or entity, containing essential information such as license plate number, model and year of manufacture, as well as the owner’s name and address.

Nevertheless, during an interview on the ‘Sunrise Daily’ program on CHANNELS TV, Adenusi raised concerns about the reasoning behind taxing cars that already possess valid documents issued by the same Federal Government.

He also speculated that the Tinubu administration might explore additional avenues to impose further taxes on Nigerians, who are already grappling with the current economic hardships.

Adenusi expressed, “When one witnesses the occurrences in Nigeria, it feels as if there is nothing left to be surprised about. The rapid imposition of these taxes would not shock me if the government starts demanding annual renewal of marriage certificates. It is unfortunate that the happenings in and around Nigeria do not align with logic in other societies. I reside in both Nigeria and Singapore, and in Singapore, the government discourages excessive car ownership through high taxes on vehicles.”

“The reason behind their efforts to limit car ownership is the presence of an excellent transportation system. They have underground and overground trains, luxurious buses, and more. However, here in Nigeria, I fail to comprehend why the government insists on repeatedly proving ownership of my vehicle on an annual basis, especially when I have already completed the necessary registrations that confirm my ownership. Frankly, it lacks any rationality.”
