Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the president-general of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has made known his plans for the Igbo people. In an interview with Punch paper, he responded to recent events that have occurred in Nigeria’s political system since Bola Ahmed Tinubu was sworn in as the country’s president.
Speaking about the Ohanaeze’s support for Peter Obama, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Chief Iwuanyanwu said that they did so not because he was the only Igbo person running, but rather because they saw potential in him and believed that if they gave him power, he would succeed.
The President-General went on to say that despite running for president of Nigeria three times, he was not elected due to his ethnicity. But he added that, as president-general of the Ndigbo, he had determined that they should ignore the Igbo presidency out of love for Nigeria. He stated how Ndigbo’s town union culture gives them the power to change their environment on their own.
He declared, “I ran three times for the presidency of Nigeria, but I didn’t win. People who have worked with me and my coworkers at every level, from secondary school to university, are aware of my abilities and my qualifications to serve as Nigeria’s president. I am aware that my race plays a role in some of it, and that is normal. I still adore Nigeria, and as president-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, I have determined that we should move past this Igbo presidency. We have discussed it extensively and have agreed to put it out of our minds. Igboland places a great deal of importance on the town union culture that the Igbo have. Any aspect of our community, including agriculture, education, culture, and industry, has the potential to develop. In the upcoming two years, we have the funds and resources to exercise such leadership.
