A cross-section of political leaders, under the aegis of Citizens Network for Peace and Development in Nigeria (CNPDN), at the weekend rejected moves by certain elements to impose former Sokoto state Governor, Waziri Tambuwal as Minority Leader of the 10th Senate.

The leaders who are mainly kinsmen of former President Goodluck Jonathan also raised the alarm about plans by some aggrieved senators to create crisis in the upper chamber.

The political leaders singled out Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, the former governor of Sokoto State, and labelled him a “desperate and serial political betrayer” who irritated President Goodluck Jonathan when in office and abandoned Tinubu in 2011 after he was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“We vehemently reject Tambuwal and company’s plot to usurp the control of the minority parties in the Senate for their own nefarious and destructive ends. Because of his history of vindictive and divisive politics, the leaders who spoke through Francis Okereke Wainwei, the Forum’s National Secretary, urged that Tambuwal should not be permitted to become the minority leader of the Senate. They asserted that Tambuwal and certain senators are attempting to revive the tense interactions between the National Assembly and the Executive that shook the foundations of previous administrations, significantly slowed down governance, and adversely harmed those administrations’ efficacy.

However, the leaders urged restraint and threatened to come clean with the MPs if they persisted in making threats.

At the same time, they appealed to Godswill Akpabio, President of the Senate, to step in and arrange a dignified funeral for the late Joseph Wayas.

The late Wayas presided over the Nigerian Senate from 1979 to 1983, according to the political leaders.

“We thus make a plea to Akpabio, President of the Tenth Senate, to step in and address whatever issues have caused this needless delay in burying our revered former Senate President in a dignified manner.
