The Police Command in Cross River has launched a manhunt for the alleged killers of a woman accused of witchcraft in the Akamkpa Local Government Area of the state.

The directive to apprehend and prosecute the culprits in accordance with the law has been issued by Gyogon Grimah, the State Commissioner of Police.

In a statement released on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, Irene Ugbo, confirmed this development.

The commissioner expressed his deep regret over the incident, deeming it unfortunate, and emphasized that no individual has the right to unlawfully take another person’s life, regardless of any justification put forth.

It should be noted that Martina Itagbor, a mother of four, was accused of practicing witchcraft after two young men lost their lives in a car accident that also injured several others. The Agency of Nigeria (NAN) had previously reported on this matter.

After being accused, the youths of the Old Ntem community in the Akamkpa council area of Cross River subjected the mother of four to a vicious beating before setting her on fire, resulting in her death.

The Police strongly condemned this atrocious crime and vowed to take all necessary measures to prevent any recurrence.

The Police Commissioner stated, “Jungle justice is a crime that the Police view with utmost seriousness, and as a result, we have initiated a manhunt for the individuals responsible for this despicable act.”

“Those responsible, no matter highly placed, will be arrested and prosecuted according to the laws of the land.”
