The city of Ibadan mourns the untimely death of 22-year-old Feranmi Akin-Akinye, a graduate of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), who tragically fell from the 26th floor of the iconic Cocoa House building. Feranmi, undergoing cybersecurity training at a company located on the eighth floor of Cocoa House, was reportedly instructed to mount a large wall banner atop the building—a task typically reserved for trained professionals with appropriate safety equipment.

Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing incident, with one stating, “When the incident happened, I initially thought it was a large bird falling from the sky. It was only when the person landed that I realized it was a human being.” Another source alleged that the company attempted to downplay the tragedy, claiming Feranmi was taken to the emergency ward despite having already passed away. His mother was reportedly not contacted by the company but learned of the incident through a random caller.

Feranmi was laid to rest on Tuesday by his church, Winners Chapel, amid tears and heartbreak. His family, described as supportive and well-regarded in their community, is reportedly considering legal action against the company for alleged negligence.

Cocoa House, located in the Dugbe area of Ibadan, holds historical significance as the first skyscraper in West Africa, completed in 1964. The building, a symbol of Nigeria’s post-independence architectural ambition, now stands as the site of this tragic incident.
