Yahoo Boy Turns a New Leaf, Surrenders to EFCC in Benin

On April 8, 2025, a 28-year-old internet fraudster from Oredo Local Government Area in Edo State voluntarily surrendered to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at their Benin Zonal Directorate. The individual, who specialized in romance scams, expressed a desire to abandon his fraudulent activities due to fear of apprehension and a genuine wish to reform.

In his confession, he detailed his modus operandi: posing as a Chinese medical doctor working in a war-torn country, he used translation apps to communicate with foreign victims, deceiving them into online relationships to exploit them financially. He stated, “I reported myself because I wanted to stop and turn a new leaf.”

The EFCC acknowledged his voluntary surrender, noting that while such actions are rare, they reflect an increasing awareness of the consequences of cybercrime. The agency continues its efforts to combat internet fraud across Nigeria
