Roadside Bomb Kills 8 in Borno State

A tragic incident occurred on Saturday, April 12, 2025, in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria, where a roadside bomb explosion claimed the lives of eight bus passengers and injured more than a dozen others. The attack took place along the Damboa-Maiduguri highway, a region frequently targeted by insurgent groups. Authorities suspect that the explosive device was planted by Islamic extremists, likely affiliated with Boko Haram.

The Damboa-Maiduguri highway has been a hotspot for such attacks, reflecting the persistent threat posed by insurgent groups in the area. Boko Haram, which began its insurgency in 2009, aims to impose a strict interpretation of Islamic law and has been responsible for numerous attacks across northeastern Nigeria. Despite efforts by the Nigerian military to curb their activities, the group continues to carry out sporadic attacks, particularly in regions where security forces are stretched thin.

This latest incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in Borno State and the broader northeastern region. The United Nations reports that the conflict has resulted in approximately 35,000 civilian deaths and displaced over two million people. The Nigerian government continues to face significant hurdles in restoring peace and ensuring the safety of its citizens in these conflict-affected areas
