Peter Obi’s Biography 

Peter Gregory Obi, popularly known by his two names, Peter Obi, was born in Onitsha, Anambra State, on the 19th of July 1961(61 years).  Peter Obi is a Nigerian businessman who progressed to become a politician and served as the Governor of Anambra State from 2006 to 2014. He was nominated by the Labour Party for the coming 2023 Nigeria presidential election.

Peter Obi’s Educational Background

Peter Obi obtained his early education in Onitsha, Anambra State. For high school, Peter Obi attended Christ the King College in Onitsha, Anambra state. In 1984, he retained his higher education at the esteemed University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he graduated with a degree in Philosophy.

Peter Obi also pursued pedagogy outside of Nigeria at prime international schools. He attended Harvard Business School in Boston, Massachusetts, and therefore went to study Financial Management/Business Policy at the London School of Economics; he also studied Marketing Management in Columbia Business School in New York, USA. Peter Obi’s Political Career

Peter Obi’s political career has never been smooth sailing. Here’s why. His political career was full of challenges, but he overcame them all thanks to his enthusiasm and determination. In 2003, Peter Obi ran for a governorship election in  Anambra State as the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) party candidate, but his opponent, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) member Chris Nige, won by an explanation of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Peter Obi refused to give in the conclusion and revolted against the matter in court for nearly three years. He ultimately won and was inaugurated as Anambra State Governor on the 17th of March, 2006. He governed for seven months because he was impeached by the state house of assembly and Virginia Etiba, who was his deputy, replaced him the following day and went on to become the first-ever female governor in Nigeria’s record. Peter Obi successfully disregarded his impeachment and was put back in office as Anambra State governor by the Court of Appeal on the 9th of February, 2007.

Peter Obi contested for Anambra state governor yet again in 2010 and he triumphed over his opponent, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, who is the former CBN governor and a party candidate for the People’s Democratic Party(PDP), who is now the present governor of Anambra state as of 2022. Peter Obi served Anambra state for four years before taking over the office in 2014 and serving for another four years.

Peter Obi contested for Vice President of Nigeria in the 2019 presidential election. In the People’s Democratic Party, he was Atiku Abubakar’s vice-presidential nominee. Nonetheless, he lost the election to incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari. And now he is fighting hard for his 2023 Nigerian presidential election as the party nominee for the Labour Party (LP) after winning the primary election.

Peter Obi’s Rise to Popularity

In March 2022, Peter Obi made his intention known to contest for the position of President of Nigeria as the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP), but later withdrew and declared he would be appealing under the Labour Party (LP). On May 24th, 2022, Obi communicated to the leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to resign as a party member. Obi reportedly disagreed about the tremendous bribery and vote-buying of representatives in his party’s presidential primary, illustrating the existence of factions opposing him.

Youths under the age of 30 have proven to be Obi’s biggest followers, conveying their backing through social media, revolts, and street rallies. Obi’s business background and status as the leading candidate, not affiliated with either of Nigeria’s major political parties, has been compared to Emmanuel Macron’s successful 2017 French presidential bid. He has expressed admiration and was one of the officials who received Macron during his visit to Lagos. Peter Obi’s passion for education and achievement has made him stand out so far and is popular among youths in Nigeria.
