The terrorist group, Boko Haram—designated as a terrorist organization by the United Nations, United States, and multiple countries—has a long history of targeting civilians, places of worship, and public gatherings across the Lake Chad Basin. Although based in northeastern Nigeria, the group has routinely launched attacks in neighboring countries including Cameroon, Chad, and Niger.

Security operatives reportedly intercepted communications indicating a planned bombing targeting mosques during Jumu’ah prayers. In response, places of worship in Garoua were closed, and local mosques advised adherents to pray at home.
