Gonorrhea is one of the most common — and most silently dangerous — sexually transmitted infections (STIs) today. Caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, it spreads mainly through unprotected sex and often shows few or no symptoms in the early stages. However, when gonorrhea begins to spread in the body, it sends warning signals you should never ignore…..CONTINUE READING
Here are 8 key gonorrhea symptoms that could mean the infection is growing or becoming serious.
1. Pain or Burning During Urination
This is often the first sign. If it feels like you’re urinating razor blades, it may be due to inflammation of the urethra caused by the gonorrhea bacteria.
2. Abnormal Genital Discharge
-
Men: Thick, white, yellow, or green discharge from the penis.
-
Women: Increased vaginal discharge with a strange color or smell.
This is a direct result of the body’s immune response to the bacteria.
3. Swollen or Painful Testicles (Men)
In advanced cases, gonorrhea can cause swelling and pain in one or both testicles. This may lead to a serious complication called epididymitis, which can result in infertility.
4. Pelvic or Lower Abdominal Pain (Women)
When gonorrhea spreads to the reproductive organs, it can cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). This leads to chronic pelvic pain and possible damage to the uterus or fallopian tubes.
5. Spotting Between Periods or After Sex
This unusual vaginal bleeding can be a sign that gonorrhea is affecting the cervix and uterus.
6. Anal Symptoms
Gonorrhea can infect the anus, especially through anal sex. Symptoms include:
-
Anal itching
-
Discharge
-
Pain when passing stool
-
Small amounts of blood
7. Persistent Sore Throat
Gonorrhea of the throat often comes from oral sex and can present as a sore throat that doesn’t go away with regular treatment. It may feel like tonsillitis or severe irritation.
8. Eye Redness or Discharge
Rare but possible — if the bacteria enter the eyes, it can cause gonococcal conjunctivitis, which leads to redness, swelling, and pus.
What to Do If You Notice These Gonorrhea Symptoms
-
Get tested immediately. Early diagnosis can prevent complications.
-
Avoid sexual activity until your treatment is complete.
-
Notify sexual partners so they can get tested and treated too.
Why Early Treatment Matters
Untreated gonorrhea can cause:
-
Infertility in both men and women
-
Chronic pelvic or testicular pain
-
Increased risk of HIV
-
Eye infections or joint problems
Luckily, gonorrhea is treatable with antibiotics. But delays in treatment allow it to spread and damage your body silently.
If you notice any of these symptoms, don’t wait. Get tested, protect your health, and seek treatment immediately. Gonorrhea might be silent — but the consequences of ignoring it are loud.
