President Bola Tinubu has reacted to the final report published by the European Union regarding the last general election, particularly the February 25 presidential election which has generated a lot of controversies across the country.
In an earlier report, the Union expressed concern over the autonomy of the national electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), stressing that the appointment process of the officials of the electoral body means that are not totally independent.
European Union said, ” The selection process leaves the electoral institution vulnerable to being viewed as aligned with the government, ” stating that even though the constitution clearly stated that the electoral umpire should be non- partisan, the selection of its officers is questionable.
” The constitution provides that all members of INEC are strictly non- partisan. At the same time, there is no legal requirement that their selection be undertaken according to merit and qualification to ensure the independence and efficiency of the institution, ” the EU stated.
However, while reacting to the report, President Tinubu blasted the foreign observers, stressing that it’ s absurd to think that a foreign institution will be assessing the country’ s electoral process and determine if it’ s credible or not with its yardstick, Vanguard reports.
” We find it preposterous and unconscionable that in this day and age, any foreign organization of whatever hue can continue to insist on its own yardstick and assessment as the only way to determine the credibility and transparency of our elections,” the President made this known through Dele Alake, his Special Advisers on Special Duties, Communications, and Strategy.
Speaking further, the President commended INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission), and stated that the last general election was the best election ever conducted in the history of the country from 1999.
He said, ” Our earlier position that the technology- aided 2023 general elections were the most transparent and best- organized elections since the return of civil rule in Nigeria has been validated by all non- partisan foreign and local observers. “
