The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will employ the services of 427 lawyers to prosecute 215 persons who committed electoral infractions during the 2023 general elections. The decision was disclosed by INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, during a meeting with the state Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to review the general elections.

Yakubu stated that the commission had received 215 case files from the Nigerian police regarding electoral offenses. In collaboration with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), INEC will work towards the prosecution of these offenders. The NBA has generously provided 427 lawyers who will handle the cases free of charge.

Additionally, during the meeting, the commission discussed preparations for the upcoming off-season governorship elections in Kogi and Imo states, scheduled for November this year. The final list of candidates for the governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi states was recently published by INEC. The Commission approved the list during its regular meeting on June 6, 2023.
