Most people assume that once a food product hits its expiry date, it belongs in the trash. But “best before” doesn’t always mean “bad after.” Many foods are still perfectly safe to eat days, weeks, or even months after their printed dates—especially if they’ve been stored correctly…….CONTINUE READING
Here are 15 common foods you can eat after their expiry date, without risking your health:
1. Dry Pasta
If kept sealed in a cool, dry place, dry pasta can last 1–2 years past its expiry date. Just make sure there’s no mold or off smell.
2. Canned Goods
Canned vegetables, beans, and soups are safe for up to 2 years after the expiration date as long as the can isn’t rusted, swollen, or leaking.
3. White Rice
White rice has an incredibly long shelf life—up to 30 years when stored properly in airtight containers. Brown rice spoils faster due to its oils.
4. Hard Cheeses (Like Parmesan)
Mold can be sliced off hard cheeses, and the rest is usually still good. Keep refrigerated and tightly wrapped.
5. Bread (Frozen)
Expired bread might be stale, but if you freeze it before it molds, it’s perfectly fine to toast or use in recipes like French toast.
6. Yogurt
If unopened and stored properly, yogurt can be safe to eat 1–2 weeks past the date. Give it a sniff and stir—if it smells and looks fine, it likely is.
7. Milk (If Smells Okay)
Milk can last a few days past its expiration date. Give it a smell test before pouring. Sour smell = toss.
8. Chocolate
Chocolate may develop a white “bloom” after expiry, but it’s still safe to eat for months afterward, especially if sealed and dry.
9. Cereal
Unopened cereal can be eaten 6–8 months past its expiry, although it might taste less fresh.
10. Honey
Honey never expires due to its natural antimicrobial properties. It may crystallize, but that’s easily fixed by warming it.
11. Frozen Foods
Expiration dates on frozen foods mostly indicate quality, not safety. If it’s been kept frozen the whole time, it’s still safe.
12. Peanut Butter
Unopened peanut butter can last up to a year past its expiration date, and opened jars are usually good for months more if refrigerated.
13. Butter
Stored in the fridge, butter can be used 1–2 months past its date. You can also freeze it to extend its life.
14. Vinegar
Vinegar is acidic and self-preserving. It has an indefinite shelf life, even beyond expiry.
15. Eggs (Float Test)
Don’t toss eggs without trying the float test: drop one in a bowl of water. If it sinks, it’s safe. If it floats, toss it.
⚠️ Know the Difference: “Best Before” vs. “Use By”
-
Best Before: Refers to quality, not safety. You can eat the food after this date.
-
Use By: Refers to safety. It’s best to avoid food past this date—especially meats and perishables
You don’t have to throw food away just because the date on the label says so. Trust your senses—look, smell, taste—and use smart storage habits. Not only will you waste less, but you’ll also save money.CONTINUE READING
